The 5 Different Types of Pipettes

Pipettes are one of the essential tools in the laboratory. Precise and accurate liquid transfer prevents a mess in the laboratory. Laboratory testing heavily relies on the accuracy of pipetting results.
Here is everything you need to learn more about the difference and importance of these pipettes:

1. Disposable/ Transfer Pipettes
This type of pipette is the most common pipette type and is used for rough measurements. This pipette can only be used once and should be properly discarded after every use.
It is necessary to follow a standard pipetting technique when using this pipette.

2. Graduated Pipette
The graduated pipette works like a syringe and allows for specific amounts of liquids to be dispensed, but is less accurate than other pipettes.
Calculating the final liquid is done by subtracting the amount of fluid before and after it is dispensed.

3. Single-Channel Pipette
The single-channel pipette is used to transfer small to medium volumes of liquids precisely. This pipette is also used in life science laboratories. Unlike the other pipettes, this is non-disposable and can be reused by replacing the tips. Single-channel pipettes have an air-displacement design allowing for accurate measurements.
Single-channel pipettes must be calibrated to ensure accurate and precise pipetting results. To learn more about the importance of pipette calibration, check out this article here: Why It’s Important to Have Your Pipettes Calibrated (jarcet. p h)

4. Multichannel Pipette
Multichannel pipettes have either 8 or 12 channels that can simultaneously transfer small volumes of liquid through separate tips. This pipette is recommended when transferring reservoir reagents into well plates of different sizes.

5. Repeat Pipette Dispenser
This type of pipette is used for repeated dispensing of the sample volume multiple times into multiple receptacles without having to aspire in between each dispensing step. The multi-dispensing capability saves both the time and effort of the technician.
